State Health Plan-Healthiest WI 2010 The State Health Plan was developed to improve the health of the people of Wisconsin. The plan includes suggested activities and desired outcomes for eleven health priorities, and lists agencies and organizations that might collaborate in these efforts. Two health priorities of special interest to WDA members are Adequate and Appropriate Nutrition, and Overweight, Obesity, and Lack of Physical Activity.

ADA's Political Action Committee (ADAPAC) website-- http://adapac.org/
ADAPAC is one of the top 15 national health care professional PACs in the country. It is the only political action committee dedicated to promoting food, nutrition, and health. The new website provides general information on ADAPAC, describes how ADA members can get involved, lists ADAPAC activities, including local fundraisers, and provides an ongoing list of the federal candidates ADAPAC has contributed to since January of this year. Contact information for the ADAPAC is located on the website for members who have an issue that they want addressed, or if they want to identify a federal candidate to ADAPAC's for campaign support.

Dietetic practitioners are often called upon to contact state or federal legislators to assist in "getting the word out" on important legislation. This is an easy and important way to get involved in promoting the profession. Watch the WDA home page for Action Alerts when we need you to come to action!

Some tips you may find helpful when writing to legislators include:

Clearly identify the subject, title or bill number to which your letter refers.
Make clear what side of the issue you are on, and ask the legislator to support your view.
Always be polite.   Never threaten.  Being unprofessional will serve more to alienate the legislator.  Even if you cannot persuade him or her, you may be able to neutralize potential opposition and keep them from working against you.
Put your professional and personal credibility behind your request.
Include personal stories documented with facts and figures.  Legislative staff report that these types of letters stick in their minds.
Emphasize you are a constituent of your elected official and include your home address.
