House Passes a "Farm Only" Farm Bill

The House of Representatives has passed a Farm Bill that excludes the nutrition title, which funds critical food assistance and nutrition education programs, such as SNAP, SNAP-Ed, Farmers Market Nutrition Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, TEFAP and CSFP. Thousands of Academy members lead these programs that benefit millions of Americans.

The Academy urged Congressional leaders to draft and pass a Farm Bill that protects and strengthens nutrition assistance for vulnerable, low-income families. Splitting the Farm Bill in two will create policies that focus on individual parts rather than the larger food system. Unfortunately the House leadership removed the nutrition title and voted on a farm only bill. The vote on the bill was closer than expected: 216 in support and 208 against.

The Academy is waiting to see how the House leadership plans to deal with the nutrition title. We hope they will support strong nutrition assistance programs that address hunger in our country.
