Treat and Reduce Obesity Act: Support for RDs providing weight management MNT

Older Americans Act: An Update

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee continues to work towards the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA). The bill markup has been pushed back several times, but we remain in close communication with committee staff to ensure that nutrition programs are protected and strengthened when the bill is reauthorized. The Academy has submitted several recommended changes to the committee that would strengthen the role of RDNs in OAA nutrition programs.

·         Stronger language to require that nutrition programs provide nutrition counseling and education;

·         Stronger language to ensure that meal providers utilize the expertise of RDNs;

·         A study comparing state- and Area Agency on Aging-level nutrition programs that employ/retain an RDN to those that do not (to show the cost-effectiveness and better health outcomes associated with using RDN services);

·         Ensuring that Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) include information on nutrition and nutrition education to assist consumers; and

·         Encouraging the use of locally-grown foods in meal programs as well as opportunities to partner/contract with local producers and providers of locally-grown foods.

The HELP Committee is expected to resume work on the bill after the conclusion of August recess. We will keep you informed of the status of this legislation as it moves through the reauthorization processes.
