Tell USDA to Ensure Kids Have Access to Healthy Meals this School Year
Thursday, August 27, 2020
Skyrocketing unemployment rates due to the COVID-19 pandemic have left many more families wondering how they will make ends meet, including providing healthful meals to their children. This is particularly concerning for the communities of color who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and are more likely to experience food insecurity.
As schools continue to open, the U.S. Department of Agriculture must provide school nutrition programs the flexibility needed to reach hungry children while keeping critical frontline workers – including Academy members – safe. Early reports by Academy members suggest that variable learning environments, coupled with stringent operational expectations, are making it difficult to reach children in need of a healthy meal.
Tell Secretary Perdue to extend critical nutrition waivers to ensure kids have access to healthy foods this school year.
