WAND Joint Legislative Advocacy Day a huge success
Monday, March 21, 2016
On Wednesday, March 16, over 120 members from WAND and the School Nutrition Association of Wisconsin (SNA-WI) came together in Madison for the 2016 WAND / SNA-WI Joint Legislative Advocacy Day. To say the event was a success would be an understatement.
During the morning educational seminars, participating members heard from WAND’s lobbing team on the importance of building relationships with state legislators and how effective advocacy can benefit Academy members and the RDN profession as a whole. Members were also briefed on the issues they were asked to speak about in scheduled meetings with their legislators, including preservation of the state Dietitians Affiliated Credentialing Board. Making sure the board continues to regulate RDNs in Wisconsin is a top legislative priority for WAND in 2017. Members were also asked to thank lawmakers for passing the WIC Dietetic Internship Bill.
In addition, the event included two guest speakers, State Representative Mike Rohrkaste (R-Neenah), author of the WIC Dietetic Internship Bill, and Senator Julie Lassa (D-Stevens Point). Both lawmakers, who were well-received by WAND members, touched on the important role citizen advocacy plays in advancing critical nutrition policies. They also talked about the need for elected officials to better understand how good nutrition and healthy eating habits can positively impact the lives of Wisconsin residents. Both speakers were peppered with great questions from the crowd.
The day ended with advocacy day participants heading to the State Capitol to talk to their legislators about the issues important to WAND and the RDN profession. Initial feedback from participating members was extremely positive, and talk of a bigger and better (if possible) advocacy day in 2017 has already started. Stay tuned….
