On Wednesday, March 15, WAND members joined forces with members of SNA-WI at the State Capitol for a joint Legislative Advocacy Day. It was a full day that allowed members to meet and network with other industry professionals and included welcomes from Sen. Roger Roth (R-Appleton) and Rep. Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton). There were advocacy and lobbying presentations by Hoven Consulting, and for the first time, the group gathered for a photo inside the Capitol before meeting with legislators.

More than 90 people attended Advocacy Day and met with Representatives, Senators and staff from districts across Wisconsin. During the meetings, members talked about their profession as well as current legislative issues that included lobbying in support of RDN certification, the Dietitians Affiliated Credentialing Board (DACB), the Nutrition Education Act, the Farm to School Director position and School Breakfast Program funding.

While RDN certification and the DACB issues are specific to WAND, there is joint advocacy with SNA-WI regarding the Nutrition Education Act, the Farm to School Director position and School Breakfast Program funding.  All of these topics were discussed during the afternoon legislative meetings. It was a very productive day and gave WAND members the chance to connect with lawmakers and make offices aware of these priorities. Aside from these important topics and other legislative business, the major issue being talked about in the Capitol right now is the budget. Last month’s e-newsletter update provided information about topics (some of which were highlighted on Advocacy Day) of interest to WAND in the 2017-2019 biennial budget. While there have not been any changes made to the budget so far, the next steps in the process have been announced with agency briefings and public hearings. Below is the schedule for agency briefings and public hearings for the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC):
