HOD Mega Issue: Public Health Leadership
Tuesday, February 20, 2018
The House of Delegates (HOD) conducted a dialogue on October 20, 2017 to address the mega issue question: How can nutrition and dietetics practitioners secure influential public health positions in institutions, organizations, and government bodies? Based on the dialogue, a series of guiding principles were identified related to actions needed:
1. Public health nutrition is embedded in the Academy’s new strategic plan.
2. Public health affects all areas of nutrition and dietetics practice.
3. Individual members and the Academy need to work together to create and pursue opportunities that will help advance nutrition and dietetics practitioners to higher levels of public health leadership. In order to achieve our envisioned future, the work on the motion outcomes will continue over the next 3-5 years, and even beyond, to advance leadership roles in public health.
Over the next few months, the Committee for Public Health/ Community Nutrition and The Public Health and Community DPG will be finalizing definitions, resources and identifying gaps in our current opportunities. With time, these two groups, the Academy’s Marketing and Strategic Communications teams and the Academy’s Executive Team and Board of Directors will be making further assessments and developing additional relationships. The Committee for Life Long Learning will also be developing Level 2 and Level 3 educational opportunities.
WAND Delegate Valerie Shurley, MBA, MS, RDN, CD, will be creating a ‘Wisconsin Public Health’ database for future reference. If you or any of your peers are involved in Public Health, please send Valerie your name and email address!
